The Soundtrack to this Haibun is “Nightswimming” by R.E.M.
They all flare at once as our faces become evening-scented stock. Avogadro’s Law says they are
all the same, but the tide keeps rising and rising all around us. The island gigantism of suburban
lawns magnifies the movement of our fingertips into gravity waves. Each hortus conclusus is a
quine sparking infinite regression. Strange stolons pierce the white picket veil and fill our mouths
with cricket absence obscene.

Joshua St. Claire is an accountant from a small town in Pennsylvania who works as a financial director for a large non-profit. His poetry has been published or is forthcoming in Lana Turner, Sugar House Review, Burningword Literary Journal, Allium, and Ligeia Magazine, among others.
