Into the Land of Nod Genesis 3:9

Poetry by Alex Stolis

Into the Land of Nod
Genesis 3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him,

                          Where art thou?

These other drunks are unlike me. I know how to drink
myself sober. Perfection lives in silence

breathes in dark corners. I don’t want her to abandon me
in this unconsecrated room. She is soft as a tender tree

in a summer storm. I’ve seen her naked; seen the way
the truth, the light; we’ve turned wine into redemption.

Why does the last word always have to be amen?
She promises we’re blessed,

insists we should pray for the unfortunate souls
who can only attempt this kind of death.
